The Virgo group in Padova (Italy) is seeking to hire two post-docs in experimental gravitational-wave physics with start date in the first half of 2020. Each position will last two years and carry a net salary of about 17.500 euros/year.
We invite expressions of interest from candidates willing to work on any of the following research topics:

  • thermal noise in mechanical oscillators out of thermodynamic equilibrium
  • quantum-vacuum squeezing techniques
  • laser-cavity mode-matching sensing and control
  • stray light analysis and mitigation
  • high-performance OPLLs
  • production and characterization of low-loss optical coatings

The successful candidates will also have the opportunity to spend part of their research time at the Virgo site in Cascina, Italy.

Our group counts 4 faculty members of the Department of Physics and Astronomy (DFA) of the University of Padova, 5 INFN researchers and 3 post-doctoral fellows. Active lines of research in gravitational wave physics include instrumental science, data analysis and astrophysical modeling. Our laboratories are hosted inside the INFN Legnaro National Laboratories. Thanks also to the close collaboration with local INFN section, the DFA is ranked #1 physics department in Italy by the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes, and has recently been awarded funding for an excellence program on the Physics of the Universe.

Start date and focus of each position are flexible. We encourage all interested candidates to contact dr. Giacomo Ciani (giacomo.ciani@unipd.it) by January 15th, 2020.
