1. ERC-funded postdoctoral positions in stellar black hole binary formation and dynamics
--------------------------------
We invite applications for several postdoctoral research positions funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant DEMOBLACK led by Dr. Michela Mapelli. The DEMOBLACK team will investigate the formation channels of merging stellar black hole binaries in the field and in star clusters, by means of population synthesis and dynamical simulations.
We are seeking ambitious, highly-qualified postdoctoral researchers with experience in any of the following areas:
1- binary population synthesis codes and massive star evolution;
2- direct N-body simulations of star clusters and black hole dynamics (using nbody6 or similar codes);
3- adaptive mesh refinement simulations and/or smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of star cluster formation;
4- model selection techniques and Bayesian analysis (possibly applied to gravitational-wave data).
Successful candidates will join an active research team, working in the vibrant research environment of the University of Padova and of the Padova Astronomical Observatory. Enquiries about the scientific project can be addressed to Michela Mapelli: michela.mapelli@oapd.inaf.it
More details about the research group can be found at http://web.pd.astro.it/mapelli/group.html
The earliest possible starting date is September 2018, but later dates are possible. Applicants must have a Ph.D. (in physics, astronomy, astrophysics, or equivalent degree), or are expected to obtain their Ph.D. by the time of the appointment. The appointments are for 2 years, with a possible extension up to 5 years depending on performance. Gross salaries range approximately from 28000 to 63000 EUR/year, depending on experience, more than adequate for local costs of living. Generous travel funds are available.
Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests (maximum 3 pages), complete list of publications, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to Michela Mapelli, michela.mapelli@oapd.inaf.it. Applications sent by May 15 2018 will receive full consideration. Applications after this date are still welcome until the positions are filled.
Women, Minorities, and Disabled Persons are encouraged to apply.

2. Postdoc / scientific software developer for the ERC project DEMOBLACK
--------------------------
We invite applications for a postdoctoral/ scientific software developer position funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant DEMOBLACK led by Dr. Michela Mapelli. The DEMOBLACK team will investigate the formation channels of merging stellar black hole binaries in the field and in star clusters, by means of population synthesis and dynamical simulations.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development and maintenance of our population-synthesis code SEVN (written in C++) and to the development of software for direct N-body simulations. We are looking for applicants with excellent knowledge of C++ and python. Experience with GPU programming (CUDA or OpenCL) and parallel programming will be an advantage.
