The Institute for Gravitational Research is currently developing a field portable precision Micro-Electro-Mechanical Sensor (MEMS) for application in volcano monitoring. Previous research work has shown that long-term stable MEMS gravimeters can be operated via the incorporation of thermal stabilisation to a low frequency MEMS device, fabricated in silicon. This project, funded for 4 years under a FET-OPEN European Award, will deliver multiple MEMS sensors onto the side of Mt Etna, Italy, for the purpose of monitoring magma build-up in the volcano. The MEMS devices will work together with an array of other sensors including seismometers, tiltmeters and an atom absolute gravimeter.

This post will build upon previous research in the field of MEMS gravimeters, with responsibility for the delivery 70-80 packaged MEMS gravimeters, including design, simulation, fabrication, characterisation, and publication of results.
